The Wickham Almshouses built in 1868.
Shepton Mallet United Charities is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), registered charity no 1175666, that provides social housing in the form of almshouses for local people of limited means. The Charity incorporates the Strode Charities of 1627 and 1699, as well as the Wickham Charity of 1864.
The pictures above show, left, Church Lane and the Strode Almshouses on the south side of the church; centre, the arms of the Strode family built into the wall of the Strode Almshouses, and right, the Wickham Almshouses on the north side of the church.
Although many small gifts have been made to the Charity over time, we now seek suitable buildings as a means of extending our ability to provide social housing. Three properties have not long been added at Milliner Court.
The Charity now has twelve properties referred to as Almshouses. The Almshouses are for long term residents of Shepton Mallet and its immediate surroundings who are preferably aged over 55, whose circumstances require a move to sheltered accommodation. If younger than 55, a higher level of need has to be established.
From time to time a vacancy occurs and should you wish to be considered for our waiting list we have application forms available. For further information please see How To Apply.
